Marcia Vaughan

Marcia Vaughn is the author of over 85 books for children including Whistling Dixie, an ALA Notable Children’s Book, and Up the Learning Tree.

Up the Learning Tree was selected for these honors: winner of the South Carolina Children’s Book Award, Bank Street College Best Children’s Books of the Year list, Storytelling World Award Winner and Society of School Librarians honor Book.

Born and raised in Tacoma, Washington, Marcia worked as an elementary school librarian for eleven years in both the USA and Australia. Marcia enjoyed reading books to her students so much she decided to try writing a children’s book of her own. It was so much fun she couldn’t stop. While living in Australia, Marcia’s first children’s book, Wombat Stew, was published. Now in it’s 25th year of publication, Wombat Stew is also a touring stage play.

As she writes, Marcia hears the characters talking to each other in her imagination. She writes down their conversations then fills in the descriptive parts. She then reads each new story onto cassette tape and listens to make sure the entire story sounds just right. Marcia has had both fiction and non-fiction books published in countries all over the world.

Today she lives on Vashon Island in Washington where she enjoys swimming, watching the eagles and reading LOTS of great books.
