James Bird

James Bird was born in California, raised by his Native American mother and his older brother and younger sister.

In his childhood, he lived in and out of dozens of apartments, often resulting in being evicted, causing his family to spend many months living in a car. Mid-way through high school, James felt he needed to connect to his Native American roots, so on his own, he moved to Minnesota where his tribe was located. It was there where he became fascinated with their storytelling and decided that is how he wanted to spend the rest of his life; telling stories.

He moved to Los Angeles and dedicated his life to writing. After finding a few like-minded friends, he formed Zombot Pictures in 2012. Together, James has written and directed three films independent films—Eat Spirit Eat, Honeyglue, and We Are Boats, each focusing on diversity, equality, and compassion.

In 2018, James moved to Massachusetts with his wife, NYT Bestselling YA author and actress Adriana Mather. Along with raising their first child, Haxtun Wolf Mather (and their countless animals), they spend their days and nights writing novels together and rescuing animals. His debut middle grade novel, The Brave, was published by Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan in Spring 2020.
