Dinah Johnson

“I began thinking of myself as a writer when I was in the sixth grade. So it wasn’t a surprise to anyone when I majored in English and Creative Writing in college.

“But my creative writing was put on hold when I went to graduate school, where I wrote my dissertation on the history of African American children’s literature. So as Dr. Dianne Johnson-Feelings, I’ve been devoted to teaching and writing about this literary tradition I love so much.

“Most dear to me is my work as Dinah Johnson—contributing to that tradition that I study and celebrate. My favorite days are when I visit schools. These visits are meaningful to me because I’m able to share my books, and my love of words, with young people and families. After one of my visits, I received a note from a little girl who told me, ‘You had made my heart sing.’ I hope that each one of my books makes the heart of someone, somewhere, sing.”
